Elegant Jewelry Women Wore

Some of the most impressive jewelry was found in the tomb of wealthy Egyptian women and royal princesses. A few of the jewelry was in the shape of animals and birds, filled with powders, oils, unguents, and perfumes. Man, wouldn't you want to be royalty with everyone at your every foot and knee when you want something? I know I sure would. Although I'm not talking about Cleopatra, but she would always wear a cobra on a piece of jewelry because she liked them so much.

Even Poor People Wore Jewelry?

Although their jewelry wasn't expensive or flashy, they still wore some type of jewelry. To be specific, they wore copper instead of gold jewelry like pharaohs or rich people. Too bad the people with gold couldn't just let them borrow it for like a day or two, or maybe for even a year or century. Poor people in the Egyptian society made their own accessories with their bare hands out of shells and pottery. Man I sure am glad I don't have to make my own jewelry. When they wore strings or collars, they wore them with faience beads and amulets(faience is pottery coated with brightly colored glazes). Even the poorest child on the block wore a pottery or bone ring or amulet with a crude image of Bes.

What Types of Jewelry Did Women Wear?

Egyptian women and men wore all types of jewelry, such as necklaces, bracelets, and other accessories. Necklaces came in a wide variety, and when I mean wide variety, I mean wide variety. I'm not going to give you all of them, but I'll give you a few, and they are chokers, single and multiple strand, pendants, and broad collars. Guess what, the broad collar could measure up to 10 inches! Whoa, now that's a big collar! This type of necklace was primarily made of gold, with inlays of semiprecious turquoise, lapis lazuli, garnet, carnelian, and other stones.

Why Wear Jewelry?

They wore jewelry to enhance their appearance. No wonder why women and girls wear jewelry. The types of jewelry they would wear, are necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. So, if you want to add a little something to make your outfit look better, then put on a necklace or a pair of earrings.Just like women in our society, they would improve their prestige in the Egyptian society. These beautiful Egyptian ladies wore their accessories everywhere they went. I bet if I were there, with no jewelry on, they'd say,"Hey girlfriend where's your bling?" Just kidding! Also, they would where their jewelry to parties, gatherings, picnics, everywhere.

Magical Amulets, Say What!

Jewelry, especially amulets, and charms had magical and protective powers. Ooh!magic, sorcery!(If you don't know what movie that was from, then it was Night at The Museum). Specifically, carnelian, turquoise, and lapis lazuli brought luck. Also, amulets magically attracted good luck and warded off evil. Too bad I don't need amulets because I'm already a good luck charm. Not only did this type of jewelry give you good luck and ward off evil, they kept you safe from accidents, hunger, and thirst, and snakes, demons, and other everyday dangers. I know you think that amulets come in only one form, but they come in the form of scarabs, and the ankh(symbol of eternal life), animals, gods and goddesses, crows, and the Eye of Horus, which is also known as the symbol of wholeness.
